They sat up eagerly awaiting
Not so much as the arrival of the infamous bells
Or the sound of a HO-HO-HO
It was the anticipation of catching the face of Ole Saint Nick
They were fighting the odds
Dodging sleep like it was an evasive enemy
If you didn't know any better
You'd think they'd been drinking coffee black with no sugar
They fought the valiant fight
But the baby went down around eleven-ish
The middle child just couldn't take it around midnight
And that oldest he was strong to the bitter end
In the scheme of it all
It was indeed a Christmas Eve to remember
They fought the valiant fight
And yet were still overcome by the Sandman
